Fraud Prevention Tools

When taking online payments via your website, the vast majority of times this payment is processed in real time through a payment gateway (TMD’s recommended solution).
As part of this payment gateway, there are normally a series of “fraud tools” that help weed out dodgy payments. We’ve listed below a number of fraud tools that our preferred payment gateway provider eMatters uses:
IP / BIN Checking
Bin Checking and Blocking uses a global Bank Identification Number database, containing a list of almost 100,000 Bank Identification Numbers (BINs). The database, named BinCheck has the ability to locate the issuing bank within seconds, allowing the transaction to be processed or rejected. In eMatters’ first level screening a check is made to see if the merchant has restricted cards to their home country. If this test is passed, eMatters progresses through to checking that the card is from a bank located in the same country as the customer. If both tests are positive, the transaction then gets sent to the bank for processing.
IP Global Positioning
IP Global Positioning has the ability to locate the user and determine if their country is considered high risk. If it is, the session is closed and eMatters will return a declined transaction.
3 Strikes
3 Strikes and Out protects you from repeated attempts at forcing card numbers through the system. It keeps your merchant fees to a minimum and stops the hackers from using your account to test card numbers. We will only allow three attempts using the same UID (this is a unique identifier for each order) before it is blocked for 24 hours.
Please note : These features are useful in reducing your exposure to fraud, but they do not completely remove your risk. You still should be very aware when shipping physical goods, making sure you have read eMatter’s glossary completely. Ultimately, you, the merchant, are responsible for all chargebacks, even if eMatter’s Fraud Screen allows the transaction to be processed with the bank.
